Hash generator: MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 for text and files

Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 hashes for text or files up to 300 MB. Paste the hash from a download page to check that a file has not been changed.

How to use

  1. Choose whether to hash text or a file.
  2. Type the text or choose the file, and all four hashes are calculated at once.
  3. To verify a download, paste the publisher’s hash into the compare box to see if it matches.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser and sends nothing anywhere.

What is a hash used for?

To check that a file is intact. Changing a single character gives a completely different hash, so comparing them tells you whether a download was altered.

Should I store passwords with MD5?

No. MD5 and SHA-1 are outdated and easy to reverse with lookup tables. Store passwords with a dedicated algorithm such as bcrypt or Argon2.
